A Few Legalities To Consider

Posted 22 Sep 2011 in Ethical Law

What comes to mind when I say the word “legal”? Personally, the thoughts fly through my head like a firestorm, but that’s nothing new. I can barely control it. That’s why I write. That might actually be the first thought you have; control. You might think of gun control and whether carrying arms is legal in your state. If you’re a gun-toting granny or you hunt varmint to put food on your table, this is an important legal issue. Jed Clampett might just be your hero.Do you think of the control of authority figures and how you’d love standing up to “the man”; if only you weren’t afraid of being jailed in a prison where some big burly man or, even worse, a woman nick-named “The Demon” forces you to become their main squeeze? Do you remember the first speeding ticket you received as a nervous teenager? Did you sweat, stammer, or cry? I admit it. I cried. Right there in front of the officer. I got the ticket anyway. The term “legal” may remind you of one of many popular television series over the years such as L.A. Law or an old familiar name like Perry Mason. In addition, there are some excellent legal movies. Classic films like To Kill A Mockingbird or perhaps a newer one with a great line like “You can’t handle the truth!” Thank you, Jack Nicholson, for your stellar performance in A Few Good Men. Wow, now that was a great movie just for that line alone. Others like Erin Brockovich or Philadelphia make us aware of gut-wrenching truths, trials, and tribulations of the legal system and its impact on history. They force me to ponder my legal rights and what it took to put those laws in place.I’ve often thought of becoming a lawyer. I wonder if I could be a really good one with a waiting list and celebrity fame like Johnnie Cochran, or if maybe I would lose almost every case. Would I give a compelling argument? Could I sway a jury my client’s way? Could I possibly have to put my brother in prison or defend a psychopath who I know committed the crime? Nah, too stressful for me. But the money would sure be nice.”In accordance with all relevant rules” is a simple definition. Do you think of legal processes like adoption or legal binding business contracts? I think of my parents and their attempt at keeping the household in a state of order and running smoothly, laying down the law.In summary, the word “legal” sets off different thought firestorms in each of our minds. Fortunately, there are no legal ramifications for setting these fires.
